CHENNAI: A group of men protesting in front of the Memorial Hall near Chennai Central railway station on Wednesday evening, assaulted a police inspector for videographing them.

The inspector, Rajan of the intelligence bureau (IB), was later pacified by police personnel at the venue and treated at a private hospital. The police said, the protestors – belonging to the Popular Front of India – suspected him to be an outsider and roughed him up for videographing them before he could reveal his identity.

Nearly 150 activists, including 10 women and Popular Front of India state general secretary M S Ansari, were protesting against the police denying permission to celebrate Independence Day at Melapalayam. The police didn’t pursue the case as Rajan didn’t lodge a formal complaint.
