CHENNAI: Thirty-nine persons filed nominations for the post of Chennai Corporation mayor before district election officer and commissioner D Karthikeyan on Thursday, taking the number of nominations to 64. Saidai Ravi of Congress, Rajendra Kumar of BJP, A K Moorthy of PMK, S Ameer Hamza of SDPI were among those who filed their papers. About 3,445 candidates had filed nominations from 200 wards for councillor posts.
Around 11.15 am, PMK’s A K Moorthy reached Ripon Buildings with senior party leaders Anbumani Ramadoss, G K Mani and Jayaraman. Later , Ramadoss said the party would give priority to a green metropolis and strive towards ridding it of mosquitoes and reducing pollution.
An hour later, TNCC president K V Thangkabalu, who came with party candidate Saidai Ravi and senior leaders E V K S Elangovan and S R Balasubramaniyam , said the coming election would witness the power of the Congress.
When Socialist Democratic Party of India candidate S Ameer Hamza filed his papers, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan , who accompanied him, alleged that many names had been removed from the voters list without reason. Loksatta president Dr Jayaprakash Narayan, whose candidate D Jaghdheeswaran is contesting for mayor, said that ward-level committees would be introduced for centralisation of power.
BJP candidate Rajendra Kumar, too, promised to upgrade infrastructure in the city and ensure that there was more transparency in corporation offices.
