Writer G. Rajashekhar on Tuesday urged the Centre to dismiss the Gujarat Government and impose President’s rule there to ensure rule of law.
He was speaking at a dharna organised by the Udupi district unit of Popular Front of India (PFI) in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here to protest against the arrest of the IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt in Gujarat.
Mr. Rajashekhar said the Muslims were targeted during post-Godhra riots in 2002. The State government instead of protecting them turned a blind eye to their pleas and plight. All the officers who had spoken against the Narendra Modi were selectively targeted, he said. The Gujarat Government obstructed promotion of the then Director-General of Police R.B. Sreekumar. The recent arrest of Sanjeev Bhatt showed that the Gujarat Government was following the same path even now.
PFI district unit president Niyamat Ali, DSS president Jayan Malpe, Zilla Vicharawadi Vedike president Gopal B. Shetty, and PFI leader Haneef Muloor were present.
In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, the PFI urged the Centre to release Mr. Bhatt.
The timely intervention of Centre would strengthen the citizen’s faith in law.
An independent inquiry should be launched to probe all cases where the Gujarat Government ministers/officials had used Government machinery to harass individuals, the memorandum added.
